Les Rives • Amalfi Lux, Brush Off
Les Rives • Amalfi Lux, Brush Off
Brush-off is a term that describes the finishing technique that creates a two-tone effect on the leather. This is a full-finish leather that has layers of color built up on the grain. The top layer can be removed to reveal a different color underneath. Popularly used among luxury fashion brands, the end result is a leather that lends itself to elegant finished goods.
This leather has an extremely smooth finish on the grain. The leather is flexible and mailable, but with a medium/firm temper. Due to the full finish, this leather is water resistant, and the finished goods can simply be wiped clean. These hides are very light weight (2-2.5 oz), which will minimize the need for skiving the edges.
Amalfi & Amalfi Lux
The surface layer of Amalfi is flat/matte. When the leather is brushed, a glossy base color is revealed. The recommended way to remove the topcoat of pigment is with a brush on a wheel (but it some cases rubbing alcohol can also work). You control the degree to which the top layer is removed and the pattern you want to see on the leather.
Amalfi Lux is the same leather as Amalfi, but the entire hide has already been brushed at the tannery giving the entire piece a mirror-like gloss appearance.
Les Rives is an Italian tannery specializing in lightweight calfskin.
